UH offers summer activities for K-12 students
The University of Houston is an active member of the metropolitan Houston community. UH will offer several summer camps for grade K-12 ranging in themes ranging from science, athletics and the fine arts. UH's School of Theatre and Dance will also host several summer performances for children. TLC2 plays an important role in this community outreach by opening its doors to student groups and camps to experience science and technology first hand.
TLC2: Encouraging students to pursue science and technology career paths
TLC2's facilities were constructed with funding provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to enable the Center's mission to foster and support interdisciplinary research, education and training at the University of Houston and beyond. Since then, TLC2 has actively sought to support programs for grades K-12, as well as graduate and undergraduate, that encourage students to chose an academic and career path in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Student campus tours or camps are welcomed to visit TLC2. Given availability and advance notice, the Center will happily arrange a science demonstration by affiliated faculty members or provide a presentation in our 2D/3D Visualization Theater. To request a TLC2 tour, please contact Rosalinda Mendez, Associate Director, at rcmendez@tlc2.uh.edu. As an alternative contact for additional information, please feel free to contact Austin Smith, Communications Dir., at austin@tlc2.uh.edu

Theatre and Dance: Fun and culture come alive on stage
From the Bard to the Brothers Grimm, theater-goers revel in classic tales brought to life by the University of Houston’s School of Theatre & Dance. Each summer, UH entertains thousands of Houstonians during two of the city’s favorite festivals: the Children’s Theatre Festival and the Houston Shakespeare Festival.
Founded in 1978, the Children’s Theatre Festival presents original productions aimed at younger audiences and frequently features the talents of renowned theater stars including Tony Award-winning songwriter Jerry Bock (Fiddler on the Roof).
"Words cannot describe what Jerry brings to this festival," says Sidney Berger, John and Rebecca Moores Professor of Theatre & Dance. "He treats each of these productions as if it was going to open on Broadway."
Since 1975, The Houston Shakespeare Festival, co-sponsored by UH and the city of Houston, has presented classic works in Miller Outdoor Theater. The open-air, casual environment is very much like the original Globe Theater where the Bard saw his own works performed for the first time.
"The actors themselves perform with the same candor as the ones who originally played these roles hundreds of years ago," Berger says. "This is the kind of atmosphere that should be present for Shakespeare’s plays." Dr. Sidney Berger is the founder and producing director of the Houston Shakespeare Festival and co-founder and producer of the Children's Theatre Festival at UH.
