Girls Reaching and Demonstrating Excellence in Engineering Camp, June 9-13, 16- 20, 2003
Ninth through twelfth grade girls visited the Texas Learning and Computation Center as part of a week-long day program designed specifically for girls interested in engineering. The GRADE Camp exposed the girls to engineering through “hands-on” experience with an emphasis on career exposure rather than career choice. TLC2 presentations represented the vast array of topics and opportunities for interdisciplinary research and education in the fields of robotics, biomedical engineering and structural biology. Tours of the visualization lab and TLC2 computing facilities were given to the fifty girls. Students who successfully complete the camp are awarded a scholarship if they subsequently major in engineering, natural sciences or mathematics at the University of Houston. GRADE Camp is sponsored through a National Science Foundation Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program and a Texas Workforce Development Act grant.
