Director, Allied Geophysics Laboratories
Kurt Marfurt's 24-year career in geophysics has taken him across the U.S.
and as far abroad as France and Korea. His work, which centers on using technology
to improve oil and gas exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon reservoirs,
has earned him three patents and six awards.
As Professor of Geophysics at the University of Houston (UH), Dr. Marfurt
acts as mentor to doctorate and post-graduate students, and teaches Practical
Seismic Interpretation. As Director of UH's Allied Geophysics Laboratories,
Dr. Marfurt oversees an industry-supported consortium in 3-D acoustic and
elastic seismic modeling, data analysis, and imaging for oil and gas exploration.
Active in the field of geophysics, Dr. Marfurt has delivered more than 30
presentations at symposiums worldwide. He is a member of the Geophysical
Society of Houston, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the American
Geophysical Union, the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers,
the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Society for Industrial
and Applied Mathematics, and the Nature Conservancy. He is also an executive
member of the Geophysical Society of Tulsa and has served as associate editor
for several industry journals.
Dr. Marfurt holds a PhD in applied geophysics from Columbia University.
