As associate professor with the University of Houston's (UH) Department of Computer Science, Barbara Chapman's current work revolves around tools and software technologies related to high-performance computing. She is currently also a visiting professor with the University of Southhampton's Department of Electronics and Computer Science in the U.K.

Much of Dr. Chapman's research at UH is focused on OpenMP, a recent industry standard for shared memory parallel programming that has been broadly accepted by the computing community. OpenMP aims to make it easier to use general-purpose computational grids by building technology to collect and store information on user/project accounts, in addition to housing applications and computational resources. Making hardware, software and other computing resources available for use irrespective of their location and connectivity will continue to improve the ability of computer users around the world to share research and data quickly and reliably.

Dr. Chapman's involvement with OpenMP has included the organization of a series of workshops in Europe and the U.S., as well as the inception of an OpenMP User Group, a community that consists of researchers, developers and users who are actively involved in OpenMP-based work. Her research has been published in numerous journals and books, and she has been an invited participant at a number of international conferences for the computing industry.

Dr. Chapman holds a PhD in computer science from Belfast's Queen's University.
