In addition to his leadership role with the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, John Bear is professor of Chemistry at the University of Houston (UH). His 43-year career has been spent almost entirely at UH, in leadership roles with the Department of Chemistry. During that time, Dr. Bear has published more than 110 scientific papers on the anti-cancer activity of rhodium and platinum compounds and the chemical and electrochemical reactivity of transition metal and lanthanide metal complexes.
Dr. Bear has been the researcher advisor for 25 PhD and six master's degree students. In addition, 32 postdoctoral fellows and visiting faculty scholars have worked with Dr. Bear's research group at UH. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences Panel established to evaluate the medical and biological effects of the platinum-group metals introduced into the environment by automobile catalytic converters. A consultant helping to launch summer science programs for college chemistry teachers in Pakistan, Dr. Bear has also established research and teaching collaborations between UH and major universities in France, Italy and Russia. He is the UH representative to the Council of Chemical Research and a past member of the Academic Advisory Board of Dow Chemical Company. He has presented more than 100 seminars and scientific papers at national and international conferences.
Dr. Bear holds a PhD in inorganic chemistry from Texas Technological University.
