Title: A profile-based approach for topology aware MPI rank placement

Multi-core blade solutions interconnected with Infiniband have become a dominant compute platform for high performance computing. The communication characteristics of these systems vary significantly depending on whether the communication is occuring within a socket, within a blade, within an enclosure, or a between enclosures. To complicate matters, the latency and bandwidth characteristics often vary differently as the physical distance between communication endpoints changes. HP-MPI insulates these complexities from the application by using a profile-based optimization for rank placement based on the communication pattern of the application and the communication properties of the target system. We present the mechanisms used for collecting application communication characteristics, collecting a system communication profile, and solving the resulting graph edit distance problem. An initial measure of application impact is demonstrated on 64 BL460 blades with two Intel(R) Xeon(R) Woodcrest CPU's connected via Infiniband ConnectX DDR.
