Global Photographies: Histories Theories Practices
Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Dun Laoghaire, Co.
Dublin, Ireland Wednesday 27th - Friday 29th June 2007
The Photography Program at the Institute of Art Design &
Technology, Dun Laoghaire in Dublin is pleased to announce that it will be
holding an international conference on photography and globalization in June
2007. The aim of the conference is to bring together photographers, artists,
curators and writers on the photographic image from a range of disciplines to
examine all aspects of photography's role in globalization.
Widely perceived to be the driving force of our era,
Globalization has attracted much critical commentary within the field of visual
culture. Despite interest in the correlations between globalization and the
visual, however, there has been relatively little examination of the role of
photography in shaping the global media landscape. Equally the impact of
globalization on photographic and artistic practices has been an area that has
not received much commentary. The aim of this conference is to bring together
photographers, curators and writers to explore all aspects of the impact of
globalization on photography. The conference also aims to bring together
photographers and writers examining histories of the photographic image outside
of the dominant Western view of photography.
The conference organizers seek 300-500 word proposals for
20-25 minute presentations or panel discussions on any theme related to
photography and globalization. Possible themes and issues that may be explored
include but are not limited to;
- Representations of globalization in contemporary
photography
- Visual Ethnography/Anthropology
- The impact of globalization on contemporary photographic practices
- Non western histories of the photographic image
- Photography and cultural diplomacy
- Photography, 9/11 and the "War on Terror"
- Photography, globalization and the image content industry
- Photography and Diasporic identities
- Teaching globalization and photography
- Globalization and the photographic industry (digital imaging etc.)
- Urbanization
- Migration
- Environmentalism
In addition the conference organizers are interested in
receiving proposals for presentations by artists groups, organizations or
photographers who are working on projects related to photography and
globalization.
