1 Sept. 1 Discussion
Today in class we covered several essential housekeeping items and then had a discussion about Nanook and the methodology of visual anthropology. See other questions about Nanook attached...

2 Sept. 8 Discussion
Class began with five (5) students presenting their images of themselves-- Kirby, Jill, Julie, Wendy, and Piru. Afterwards we discussed approaching Exercise 2

3 Sept. 13 Discussion
Today six students presented their images for exercise one. Afterwards we spoke about group projects. Groups were asked to develop a working title, idea for their semester project, and a contact list of members. I then presented an example of how authors/photographers and editors often have different points of view about the look, feel and content of an article. Lastly we continued our discussion on elicitation methodologies.

4 Web Workshop completed
On Friday morning just more than twenty students met in PGH 200 to learn about the visualanthro webpage. Will all students who attended bring their evaluation sheets to class on Tuesday.

5 September 29

We began class today with a brief discussion about Exercise 2 and my expectations of the short paper (Due by Noon Monday, Oct. 3). Later we covered group membership and project progress. Afterwards we began watching the movie The Hunters (1958/1976).


6 October 4 Discussion
Today we finished watching John Marshall's The Hunters (72 mins). Afterwards we discussed the various anthropological themes and issues as well as several technical aspects and characteristics of the film.

7 October 6 Discussion

On Thursday we continued the discussion on The Hunters and segued into watching a more recent film on the !Kung San, The Great Dance: A Hunter's Story (2000). I gave the class several questions to consider while watching The Great Dance, especially in theoretical and technical terms for comparison with The Hunters.


8 October 11 Discussion
This morning we finished watching the movie, The Great Dance and then spent the last hour discussing it, raising issues about the filmmakers' intent and message, various editing techniques, use of technology and the application of anthropology or action anthropology in support of indigenous rights.

9 October 13 Discussion
Thursday we met in M102. Students spent time working together in groups before discussing two movies we have viewed recently. At the end of class students received their comments on Exercise 2.
